Blast Furnace

By returning former industrial sites back to nature and revitalizing derelict
sites, human beings can reduce their impact on the environment. Edwin
works with specialist nurseries and growers to select plants that can survive
in under productive soil types and  previously-polluted areas but also to
improve the soil to encourage further diversity of species.

About the Images
The blast furnace series document wild or naturalistic gardens at a former
iron works in Germany.

I am interested in what grows in places after they have been forsaken by man
and how they naturally restore themselves. By introducing new grasses and
plants and balancing the soil structure, we provide a natural filtration of the
water table, the land and nature can be secured for future generations and
not just for man but other animals, plants and insects who reclaim and adapt
to the environment.

My interests lie in the areas of conservation, restoration and sustainability. I
want to draw people's attention to the beauty of the more humble, wilder
plants and species, the problems we encounter in land use and ultimately
suggest by example how we can become better stewards of the earth.
